Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise helped her develop a love for artistic expression and creative thinking. Her aunt was a nurse working night shifts to ensure that she could devote the day to literature, art or theater as well as other activities. DuVernay enjoyed the film West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the arts can serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother who was a social conscience and advised DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay was raised with her family in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summers that DuVernay was inspired her later to make a film on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated with a graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. While she was a student DuVernay began to consider producing for broadcast journalism. DuVernay began as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned duty of looking after the house and examining the trash of one of jurors. When she was dissatisfied with journalistic work by the assignments she was given, DuVernay chose to go on to a job in publicity. DuVernay was brought in right after college, as the junior publicist for an unassuming studio. After this, she founded her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotion and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
